Geier J, Juhaeri J, Mines D, Mosholder A, Trivedi M, Eng S, Skovron ML, Stang P, Volkova N. Assessing the association of pharmacotherapeutics and suicidal behavior: lessons from the front. Presented at the 25th ICPE International Conference on Pharmacoepidemiology & Therapeutic Risk Management; August 2009. Providence, RI. [abstract] Pharmacoepidemiol Drug Saf. 2009; 18(S1):S125.

Background: Concerns over the association between suicidal behaviors and various medications have led to increasing efforts to assess suicidality in pharmacoepidemiologic studies. However, a number of methodological constraints (e.g., lack of data, poor measurement of suicidality constructs) have challenged these studies to date.

Objectives: 1) To share lessons learned and to increase awareness about challenges assessing suicidality in pharmacoepidemiologic studies; 2) To discuss strategies that may be employed to increase feasibility and effectiveness of suicidality assessments in future studies.

Description: The symposium will be of interest to individuals involved in drug safety research in general and suicidality assessments in particular.
